Uzair And His Nana

Scene 1:

(this happened countless times)

Jia talking to her mother and complaining about Uzair’s growing naughtiness.

Jia: Mom, he don’t listen to me most of the times which is really annoying. Sometimes I wish to punish him up a little for making havoc in the house.

Jia’s mom, whom I call Annee, replies to her daughter: Listen up young lady! If you even ever thought about placing a finger on my prince, I will break up your whole arm. You understand that!!
He is my prince and he can do whatever he want to do. Not a soul on earth can stop him from doing what he loves to do. Not even his own mother!! You understand that clearly, young lady!!

Jia: But mom….!

Annee: No buts! No fencing around Uzair. If he wants to play all day long, let him. Or send him over to me if you can’t let him do what he wants to do.

Scene 2:

(this also happened countless times)

Me: Uzair, what did you ate at your Nana’s home?

Uzair: Omelette

Me: And?

Uzair: Pata (Paratha)

Me: And?

Uzair: Naan

Me: And?

Jia: He ate more at his Nana’s home then what he eat at his own home. He ate a heavy breakfast there. Then took some snacks too in afternoon. Ate full lunch and in evening, he ate more snacks. This is totally strange. Uzair don’t eat this much here. His Nana also let him take an hour long bath in the bathtub and he cried for several minutes when I took him out and she yelled back over me why I didn’t let him stay in the bathtub for more.

Me: Uzair, Nana is nice?

Uzair: Nana, nice!!

Jia: And she bought even more toys for him again.

Me: Uzair, what new toys you got this time?

Uzair: Bus, wow wow (police car)

Jia: I didn’t let him bring those here. His closet is already overloaded with toys here at home.

Uzair: wow wow, Nana!!

Scene 3:

(this happened multiple times in last few months)

Uzair’s Nana is sick and he knows it.

Me: Uzair, how is Nana?

Uzair: Behter (she is better)

Me: Where is Nana?

Uzair: Hospital, sui lagi (injection), wow wow ley k jaty (she went in an ambulance)

Uzair sits on my lap.

Me: Uzair, repeat after me:
O’ALLAH! Please grant health to my Nana!!

Uzair repeats the prayer.

The Last Scene:

(Yesterday, while I was in my office, I received that one phone call I was fearing about for past few days. I rushed towards Annee’s home from office. This following conversation happened last night.)

Uzair: Baba, where is Nana?

I sealed up my tongue but my eyes  refuse to cooperate.

Uzair: Baba, I want to go to Nana!!

Me: We are at her home, buddy!

Uzair: Where is Nana, Baba?

I hugs him up with teary eyes and say: She is sleeping now, kiddo. Sleeping peacefully, away from all troubles and sicknesses of the world.

Uzair: Baba, why are you crying?

I was unable to answer him up clearly

A few hours later, one of Nana’s sister asked Uzair: Where is Nana, Uzair?

Uzair: Gone to meet ALLAH!!

Oh, Hammad, I feel so much for Jia and for you! And it is such a beautiful way to let us know through the eyes of your son. I am not a great friend and we haven’t know each others (I count Jia as a friend…), but if you wish to talk or send word or if all this is too heavy, send an emall. And even if we belong to different religions, my God and Allah are the same and unique one. So when we shall say our prayers tonight, if you allow, we shall pray for Uzair’s Nana. As we pray for our Mother who has gone to meet God/Allah as well.
Be strong and take care of you and your family. 🙂

Thank you very Camille for such comforting words. This is indeed heavy for me and, especially for Jia as losing some one as close as a mother creates an un-fillable hole in a person’s life. You know it better than me.
Thank you for remembering Uzair’s Nana in your prayers and for courageous words.

And don’t forget, both Jia and you that you have a friend on the other side of the planet who thinks of you and to whom you may write if anything is too heavy to live alone. Friends are here to share. I am here. To Uzair, hugs. But children have such an immediate and clear grasp of life and death. If Jia allows, hugs from the Girls and me. To you, our warmest regards.
