A Very Different Summer

Sun is furious here. Very, very furious.

Summer breeze isn’t around anymore.

This summer isn’t like the previous ones. Like when you can enjoy an afternoon stroll with gentle summer breeze or even when days were hot, the cool summer nights would dry off the sweat and pushes the mercury down on scales.

But not this time!

Since last week, mercury level isn’t falling down on the gauges. Every new day is making the residents of Karachi feel like yesterday was less hotter than today. And to spice things up, high humidity levels makes you sweat like a marathon runner, even if you don’t take a single step. There is no off switch to it unless you spend the whole day indoors, in a full air conditioned environment.

Mercury level may show you 35°C on the reader but you will feel like breathing in an environment of 40°C or above. No matter how many times you take bath, you will sweat up like before within 5 minutes. The speed of fans on the ceiling and floor reminds you about how fast a snail can run.

Kids at home are restricted to stay indoors untill late evening. Especially Uzair who sweats a lot, even if he is just playing in the room. For him and his cousins, this is not the summer I dreamed of. They are on their summer break and as per predictions, this weather may continue till mid of June.

Trying our best we are to keep ourselves cool during the holy month of Ramadan.

Hang in there Hammad and make like a cat ( relax and move as little as possible). I reckon heat waves are natures way of telling us to take it easy for a change.

Despite this condition, it hard for me and Jia to keep to sit still for more than couple of minutes.

This is an awful weather. We sometimes get the same in July and August and there is nothing to do but to stay at home or in a place cooled by an air conditioning system and to drink water, take baths and showers. It is quite recent here Some forty years ago I am told it happened but very seldom. It is now said that it is due the global changing climate. I am glad to see that you are so very cautious and careful about Uzair. I hope the weather forecast is wrong and you will be cooler than it is predicted.

This is happening now here every summer, right from mid of May till end of June. Karachi don’t receive as much rain as like other cities of Pakistan but winds from the sea keeps it cool. Weather was better yesterday as we didn’t sweated like few days ago. Night also turned good. Uzair suffers from skin allergy during such weather and asks us to scratch his body as long as we can. We use both medicine and traditional methods for his cure.
